Asphalt slurry seals can make life difficult for motorists who don’t have the proper equipment, or who live in areas where the surface is slippery.
“Asphalt sludge is a very hard substance to clean up,” said Mark DeYoung, director of the University of California, Davis Transportation Institute.
“It can be very damaging to the asphalt itself, to the surface, and it’s also a very slippery substance.”
DeYoung said some homeowners have to leave their cars in their garage for days, if not weeks, just to get the slurry removed.
If you’re a homeowner, here are some tips for cleaning up the asphalt sludge that you may find on your driveway or garage floor: Remove the surface as quickly as possible.
“You have to be very thorough about it,” DeYoung explained.
“There’s no time for you to go to the garage, go to your neighbor’s garage, and see if the driveway is really clear.
You’ve got to get it out.”
DeLong said there’s no way to eliminate the problem entirely, and there’s nothing wrong with the dirt, sand, or gravel that may have formed on the driveway, driveway deck, or driveway.
If there’s a thick layer of asphalt on the garage floor, the driveway can be cleaned up and the sludge removed.
“That’s one of the things that’s really important with asphalt,” DeLong told MTV News.
“If it’s a hard surface, you don’t want it to get any wet or muddy, so you have to get that off the surface quickly.”
Delong added that the best way to remove the asphalt is to scrape the driveway or driveway deck with a hand tool.
“A hand tool works well,” he said.
“I’m not saying you should go out and buy one.
You just have to have a good, good hand tool, because you dont want to use a hammer.”
If you need to clean out the driveway while it’s wet, DeLong recommends putting a small amount of water on the area.
“Put water on there and then put it on top of it,” he explained.
DeLong also recommends wiping down the driveway and driveway deck using a garden hose, a hose that is not equipped with a nozzle.
“Wipe it down with a hose and then it will just drip off and you won’t have to do anything else,” he told MTV.
“The way it’s designed, it’s really just a small hose.
Just spray the area down and then wait until it’s dry and then you can clean it up.”
DeWild added that if you can, use a small sponge to brush up the driveway before it’s completely dry.
“After it dries down, it’ll go right out,” he added.
“Then you can just take it out and get it ready for the next morning.”
If it’s been too long since you’ve washed your driveway, DeWild said that if there are any signs of asphalt slop or sludge on the floor of your driveway you can use the “dirt” to wash your driveway.
“Just wipe that out and then get a sponge and then use that to get out the dirt,” he advised.
DeWild also recommends using a damp rag to gently wipe down any surface that has fallen onto your driveway during the last 24 hours.
“Try not to touch anything,” he suggested.
DeYoung also recommends that you avoid using a lawnmower or any other tools to clean the driveway.
DeWinter said that homeowners should always wash their driveway by hand before and after a snow storm or snowstorm.
“When you have a snowstorm, you can spray some kind of a spray paint or maybe even just a spray-on adhesive to dry your driveway,” DeWinter explained.
He added that there are ways to do this without having to spray, and they don’t require you to do a lot of work.
“One thing that’s important is, if you have some kind to put in the driveway that will help you get the driveway nice and clear,” DeWild advised.
“So if you’ve got some kind that you can put on your property and you’ve been using your lawn mower for a long time, put it in your driveway.”
DeWay also recommended using a brush to gently clean any dirt that has come up on the ground while the driveway was still wet.
DeWay said that this kind of technique can help protect your driveway from road debris that may accumulate.
DeWhate said that although it’s hard to remove a driveway from a wet driveway, you should do so to prevent any road debris from accumulating on the surface.
“This is something that you do as a homeowner,” DeWhaet said.
He said that you should wash the driveway with a water-based lubricant before cleaning it up.
“Water-based grease is great,” DeWhite said.
DeWhite added that
